The dealer's only auctions are the primary way that car dealers obtain and rotate inventory.  These are NOT  public auctions, where the prices go for around retail price. These are the exclusive dealer-only auctions.

Through the auctions, you can bid on the cars, just as if you were a dealer. By doing so, you take advantage of buying a vehicle at a wholesale price. Typically the wholesale price is thousands below the lot retail price. For instance, below is the average price for a 2006 Toyota Camry on the lot at various Toyota  car dealerships (taken directly from their website) and the average price for that very same car at auction.

Retail price: $28,000

Auction price: $19,000

That is a difference of $9,000

You could buy a 2006 Toyota Camry at a Philadelphia Toyota dealership and pay their HUGE mark-up, or you could buy a 2006 Toyota Camry at the exclusive dealer's only auction (the very same auction that this Toyota Car dealership will send their cars to) and pay $9,000 less.  Basically, you can get a 2006 model year car at a 2003 model year price.

At the auction, there are about 15,000 cars that go through a week.  You can find practically any year or model Ford ever made. Of course as the cars get older, the savings are a little less. But, you still buy at wholesale prices! Even with a ten year old car, you can save a few thousand on the purchase price.

Ok, what is the catch?  Why doesn't every dealer do this? The answer is simple. Car dealers make so much money on the mark-up of used cars, there is no incentive to give the public a break on the price. Most dealers have hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars sitting on their lot. They have to make some return on their money. They would never buy a car just to break even. Otherwise, they would not be in business.

Why would any car dealer offer access to dealer-only auctions? They do because they realize that you have specific wants and needs in the car you are searching for. Just because they have a Toyota car on the lot, doesn't mean that you want that specific Toyota car. This gives you the opportunity to get very specific about what you want and find the exact car you are looking for, instead of settling for another car, just because it happens to be on the lot. Another reason dealers should take this opportunity to cater to the exact wants that you have, is they don't have the huge capital outlay on a car hoping that you come by to buy it, and won't have to have as many cars on the lot that may or may not sell.
